Online and at-home English tests: what is not accepted for Subclass 500 in 2026

Which online and at-home English results Home Affairs rejects for Subclass 500, and what to do if asked for new evidence.

2026-10-01

No. For Student visa (Subclass 500) purposes, the Australian Department of Home Affairs does not accept results from English language tests where the entire test is delivered online — described on the official Student visa (Subclass 500) page as "remote-proctored" or "at-home" tests. That page names IELTS Online, LANGUAGECERT Academic Online, OET@Home, CELPIP Online, MET Digital (taken at-home) and TOEFL iBT – Home Edition as examples of online tests that are not approved for Australian visa purposes. This answer follows the Student visa (Subclass 500) page published by the Australian Department of Home Affairs, read together with the Migration (English Language Tests and Evidence Exemptions for Subclass 500 (Student) Visas) Instrument 2025.

Everything below is general information about how the published rules read, not advice on any individual case; official wording and the latest departmental announcements remain the reference point, and anyone whose situation turns on exemption categories or past test dates should rely on those primary sources.

Which online or at-home results are rejected outright?

The rule turns on how the test was delivered, not on the score. If the whole test was taken online under remote supervision rather than at a test centre, it does not count as evidence for this visa. The department lists the following as examples of tests not approved:

  • IELTS Online
  • LANGUAGECERT Academic Online
  • OET@Home
  • CELPIP Online
  • MET Digital (taken at-home)
  • TOEFL iBT – Home Edition

Because the official wording is "include", the six names are illustrations rather than a closed list: the test to apply is whether the entire test was delivered online. The same named test sitting at a test centre — IELTS Academic, IELTS General Training, OET, CELPIP General, MET, TOEFL iBT at a centre — is treated differently from its at-home version, which is why two applicants holding scores branded with the same product name can face opposite outcomes.

Why does TOEFL iBT have its own rule in 2026?

TOEFL iBT carries two separate restrictions, and in 2026 the live one is about registration.

From 21 January 2026, applicants must select 'Taking TOEFL for Australia' during registration to ensure the test is valid for Australian visa purposes. An otherwise valid centre-based TOEFL iBT score therefore may not serve as Subclass 500 evidence unless that selection was made when booking.

The second restriction is historical but still catches people holding older scores: the department does not accept TOEFL iBT tests completed between 26 July 2023 and 4 May 2024, because during that period the TOEFL iBT test being offered was not an approved test. There is no discretion described in the published rule for the score band or test date, so the practical question for anyone holding a result from that window is whether another accepted result exists.

What about older Cambridge C1 Advanced results?

Paper versus computer delivery matters here for a defined period. From 12 February 2024 to 6 August 2025, the department accepted only results from the Cambridge C1 Advanced paper-based test. Results taken before 12 February 2024 are still accepted within the specified validity periods for both the paper-based and computer-based formats.

Two limits follow from the current scoring tables. C1 Advanced does not accept any test scores below IELTS 6, so it offers no lower threshold through packaged ELICOS, foundation or pathway options the way several other tests do. And any score below the applicable minimum cannot be converted upward by attaching extra English study.

If my result is refused, how fresh does the replacement have to be?

Timing is part of what makes evidence valid, and the measuring point depends on the evidence level applied to your application:

Evidence level When the test must have been completed
Regular Evidence level Within the 2 years before you lodged the visa application
Streamlined Evidence level, and the department has requested evidence Within the 2 years before a decision is made on the visa application

The second row is the one worth planning around: it runs to the decision date, not the lodgement date, so a score that was comfortably valid when you applied can age out while a long application is pending.

The threshold a replacement must reach depends on when you sit it, because the scoring tables changed on 7 August 2025:

Test taken on or after 7 August 2025 Minimum score With ≥10 weeks ELICOS, Foundation (Standard/Extended), or eligible Pathway program With ≥20 weeks ELICOS
C1 Advanced 161 Excluded* Excluded*
CELPIP General 7 6 5
IELTS Academic 6.0 5.5 5.0
IELTS General Training 6.0 5.5 5.0
LANGUAGECERT Academic 61 54 46
MET 53 49 44
OET 1210 1090 1020
PTE Academic 47 39 31
TOEFL iBT 67 51 37

* C1 Advanced test does not accept any test scores below IELTS 6.

For results taken on or before 6 August 2025, different minimums applied — IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 64, Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) 169, PTE 50 and OET grade B in each component at the top row — so holding an old result does not automatically mean holding a usable one.

Can the department ask for English evidence even if my checklist didn't request it?

Yes. Lodgement is not the end of the evidence question. The department states it can ask for evidence of English language skills after submission, at any time while the application is being processed, even if the Document Checklist tool showed that no English evidence was needed at lodgement.

The checklist itself is not frozen either: it is routinely updated twice a year, on 31 March and 30 September. A request arriving months after lodgement is therefore a normal part of processing rather than a sign that something went wrong, and the answer to it is a test result that satisfies the delivery rules, the date rules and the applicable score table at the same time. Suppose an applicant lodges relying on exemption-adjacent assumptions and receives such a request late in processing: under the streamlined evidence measure described above, the replacement score may have to have been completed within two years before the decision, which can be a tighter condition than it looked at lodgement.

Is there any paperwork mistake that delays things without invalidating the score?

One is called out specifically. LANGUAGECERT Academic produces two documents — a "certificate" and a "report" — and if those results are used to meet the English requirement, both must be included with the visa application. Supplying only one does not make the score invalid, but the official warning is that visa processing may be delayed.

Who does not need an English test result at all?

Some applicants never reach the question of which sitting to book. English test evidence is not required where one of these applies:

  • citizenship and a passport from the UK, USA, Canada, NZ or the Republic of Ireland
  • Foreign Affairs or Defence sponsored student, or a secondary exchange student (AASES)
  • enrolment in a principal course that is a registered school course
  • enrolment in a principal course that is a standalone ELICOS course
  • enrolment in a principal course registered and delivered in a language other than English
  • enrolment in a registered postgraduate research course
  • at least 5 years' study in English in Australia, UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, or the Republic of Ireland
  • completion of the Senior Secondary Certificate of Education in Australia in English within the 2 years before applying, while holding a Student visa
  • completion of a substantial component of a course leading to an Australian Qualifications Framework qualification at Certificate IV or higher within the 2 years before applying, while holding a Student visa

Two cautions attach to that list. First, falling into a category does not necessarily end the matter: if the Department requires you to provide English language evidence, you must then provide evidence demonstrating that you satisfy the exemption. Second, holders of a British National Overseas (BNO) passport may still be required to give English test evidence, despite the passport-based category above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is IELTS Online accepted for a Student visa (Subclass 500)?

No. IELTS Online is named on the official Student visa (Subclass 500) page as an example of a fully online test that is not approved for Australian visa purposes. IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training appear in the accepted score tables instead.

I already hold a TOEFL iBT Home Edition score — can I submit it?

No. The department does not accept evidence from tests delivered entirely online, and TOEFL iBT – Home Edition is listed as one of them. A centre-based TOEFL iBT result is the corresponding accepted option, subject to the registration rule from 21 January 2026.

What happens if I forgot to select "Taking TOEFL for Australia" when booking?

From 21 January 2026, applicants must select that option during registration for the test to be valid for Australian visa purposes. The official page sets that out as a requirement at registration; how any given booking is treated is a matter for the department's current published guidance.

My test is from 2024 and still within two years — is it automatically valid?

Not necessarily. Separate dates matter: TOEFL iBT results completed between 26 July 2023 and 4 May 2024 are not accepted at all, and Cambridge C1 Advanced results from 12 February 2024 to 6 August 2025 are accepted only from the paper-based test. The two-year window is an additional condition, not a replacement for those rules.

The Document Checklist tool told me I didn't need English evidence. Can I still be asked later?

Yes. The department can request evidence of English language skills at any time while processing, even when the checklist indicated none was needed at lodgement. The checklist is also updated twice a year, on 31 March and 30 September.

I used LANGUAGECERT Academic — do I have to submit both documents?

Yes. A LANGUAGECERT test produces a certificate and a report, and both must be included when using those results to meet the requirement. Submitting only one may delay processing even though the score itself is otherwise usable.

Do I still need English evidence if I hold a BNO passport?

Possibly. The official note states that the department may require English test evidence from applicants holding a British National Overseas passport, notwithstanding the passport-based categories in the exemption list.
