Singapore work pass numbers: format and where to find them

A work pass in Singapore carries identifying numbers you may need to verify a pass or locate your record. Two identifiers come up: the Foreign Identification Number (FIN) and the work pass number printed on a Work Permit or S Pass card. This article sets out what is published about their format, where each appears, and how to verify a pass with MOM’s official tools.

What the format is

The FIN has a published format. According to ICA, a FIN is a unique 9-character alphanumeric code with an F, G or M prefix, assigned to foreigners holding long-term passes in Singapore such as a Student’s Pass, Long-Term Visit Pass, Employment Pass or Work Permit. It is issued by ICA or MOM and is not replicated.

MOM refers to the number on a Work Permit or S Pass card as the work pass number. Read it on the original Work Permit or S Pass card: when tilted, the holographic lens reveals the number described below. The published 9-character F/G/M format applies to the FIN and should not be assumed to describe this separate card number.

MOM’s card-inspection guidance distinguishes cards by type: when tilted, the holographic lens on an Employment Pass card shows the FIN, while the lens on a Work Permit or S Pass card shows the work pass number. Each card type’s lens shows its own identifier; the guidance does not state whether a work pass number is, or is not, a FIN.

Where to find the number

On the physical card. Inspect the original Work Permit, Employment Pass or S Pass card:

• Check the photo matches the holder.
• Inspect the two holographic lenses: one reflects the holder’s image; the other, when tilted, shows the FIN (Employment Pass) or the work pass number (Work Permit or S Pass).
• Check the card matches the MOM-issued pass design and that its details match the holder’s passport.

From your employer or agent. The FIN appears on the In-Principle Approval (IPA) letter. If you are a new applicant without a FIN, ask your employer or employment agent for the IPA letter, which contains your FIN.

In the SGWorkPass app. You can set up your digital work pass to view your latest pass details, and scan the QR code on the card (for new cards with a QR code) or the digital QR code in the digital pass.

How to verify a pass is valid

Even a genuine-looking card should be checked for cancellation. MOM offers three ways to confirm validity:

• SGWorkPass app — view the digital work pass card, or scan the QR code on the card or in the digital pass.
• Web — “Check work pass and application status” — enter your date of birth followed by your FIN or passport number. No login is required and the service runs 24 hours. Work Permit holders can also check their salary information there.
• Phone — MOM’s interactive voice response system.

This check covers all MOM-issued work passes and long-term passes, including the Dependant’s Pass, Long-Term Visit Pass, Training Employment Pass, Letter of Consent, EntrePass and Work Permit. Landlords, property agents and service providers may use the portal, or scan the card’s QR code with SGWorkPass.

If you have no FIN yet

Enter your date of birth and passport number in the check service. Alternatively, get the IPA letter from your employer or employment agent, which contains your FIN. If a passport number returns “Multiple results found”, it is linked to more than one FIN; provide the unique FIN from your IPA letter.
